Bunnell Organics
Wholesale Suppliers of Compost, Humus and Basalt Rock Dust
in Flagler County, Florida

Bunnell Organics, in Flagler County, Florida, makes premium quality compost and humus. We also sell basalt rock dust.  Our products are ideal for organic gardeners who are improving the tilth, structure and fertility of their soils.

Humus
Ingredients: Aged, ground, tree trimmings, which consist of: various trees, barks, leaves, pine needles and palm fronds, etc. No other materials are added.
The tree trimmings are allowed to age for 3 to 5 years. During this time, sun, rain, air and micro-organisms gradually transform the tree trimmings from nitrogen-poor to nitrogen-rich. The material is then ground and aged some more, making nutrients even more available.
Benefits: Science is only beginning to realize the benefits of humus. Humus is the foundation and basic common denominator for all fertile soils: farm, garden and yard. Humus is decomposed organic matter in a very stable form, originally thought to be viable for centuries; now we are learning that these stable carbon substances can last for millennia. It can revitalize any soil by improving its nutrition, tilth, CEC*, moisture-holding capacity and environment for micro-organisms. Humus is the basis of good soil and the basic ingredient of our compost. It is ideal for growing edible sprouts and providing your basic growing medium.

*CEC = cation exchange capacity serves to collect plant food elements and release them as required.

Compost
Ingredients: Our compost may include any of the following: rotted tree leaves, bark and wood, animal manure, seaweed powder, montmorillonite clay, feather meal, rock dust, alfalfa meal, fish meal, blood meal, trace elements, and kitchen and garden scraps.
We gather, mix and grind all the raw materials. We then pile or windrow the raw compost and let it heat to between 140˚and 160˚. We turn the compost until it no longer heats up, then we age it for a while. This process takes 4 to 6 months.

Benefits:
Compost is organic matter decomposed into a humus-like substance. Fresh materials in the right proportions, with the right oxygen and moisture conditions, cause a rapid multiplication of micro-organisms which heat up and break down the organic matter. Then a second group of microbes binds these materials together into humic substances, creating a stable product that will release its nutrients at the proper rate and proportions for optimal plant growth.
Compost neutralizes soil toxins and harmful compounds, such as heavy metals, by making them unavailable to plants. The micro-organisms in compost produce natural soil antibiotics, enzymes and vitamins as byproducts of their metabolism, improving plant vigor and disease resistance.
Compost microbes secrete chelating agents, which unlock nutrients in the soil and provide major and minor nutrients, and is an especially good supplier of trace elements.*
Our compost is ideal for topping off your growing beds or adding to your potted plants.  Compost can also be used on lawns and around shrubs.

Basalt Rock Dust

Basalt rock dust is an excellent source of minerals for our soils, which have been depleted of minerals by rain, sun and agricultural practices.  Basalt is more easily broken down into the soil than many other rock types, making the minerals more quickly available.  Organisms in a healthy soil break down the minerals in rock dust and transport them to the plant roots, which transform them into forms we humans can assimilate.   More and more research is demonstrating the importance of minerals in soil health, plant health and human health.  For more information, see remineralize.org.
